Customs relief for relocating households

Moving to Italy? Your household goods may qualify for duty- and VAT-free import.

People relocating their normal residence from outside the European Union to Italy may be eligible to import qualifying used household goods and personal effects without customs duty or import VAT under the EU and Italian transfer-of-residence relief rules.

Italian customs rules provide transfer-of-residence relief for eligible households. Our team and Italian destination office can help explain the documents needed to claim relief, while the Italian customs authority makes the final determination.

Preparing for duty- and VAT-relief clearance

  1. Prepare an itemized inventory of your used household goods and personal effects, including descriptions and quantities.
  2. Gather evidence of your relocation such as passport/ID, proof of residence outside the EU, Italian residence or relocation documentation and any additional information requested for customs.
  3. Share documents with your destination office before shipping; requirements can vary according to citizenship, residency status, goods and arrival arrangements.
  4. Complete the Italian customs declaration with the applicable request for transfer-of-residence relief. Customs officials determine whether the goods qualify.

Family-friendly places to live in Italy, with good school options nearby

For families, choosing the right neighborhood often starts with choosing the right school. Italy offers strong public-school traditions as well as established international and bilingual programs. Below are four popular areas worth exploring for their residential lifestyle, green spaces and access to schools. These are practical shortlists, not official neighborhood or school-quality rankings.

Milan & surrounding suburbs

Baranzate, Bollate & Città Studi

Best for: families balancing international education, career opportunities and access to a major city.

Consider Baranzate or nearby northwest Milan suburbs if you want to be closer to the International School of Milan campus. Città Studi and Lambrate offer established residential neighborhoods with access to eastern Milan schools and city amenities. School run times differ considerably across the city.

Cassia, La Storta & Olgiata

Best for: families who prefer more residential surroundings and access to established English-language schools.

The Via Cassia corridor and neighborhoods toward La Storta and Olgiata are useful starting points when exploring homes in northwest Rome. This area is particularly relevant for families considering schools on or around Via Cassia; check the actual route and school-bus schedule first.

Bagno a Ripoli & Gavinana

Murri, Saragozza & Santo Stefano

Best for: families seeking walkable residential streets, parks and a university-city atmosphere.

Murri offers access to Giardini Margherita and everyday shops; Saragozza has established residential streets toward the hills, while Santo Stefano offers an appealing historic setting. These neighborhoods are worth considering alongside your child's intended school and daily commute.

Schools to explore

  • International School of Bologna — offers International Baccalaureate programs; confirm the age-specific campus address.
  • Italian state schools — compare neighborhood options through Scuola in Chiaro and secondary-school outcomes through Eduscopio.

How to identify a well-regarded school before choosing your home

International schools and Italian public schools have different admissions systems, languages of instruction and curricula. A school that's right for one child may not be the best fit for another. Compare independently available information, then contact each school directly about admission availability and transport.

Scuola in Chiaro · Italian Education Ministry

Search and compare Italian state and recognized private schools, educational programs, facilities and school details.

Eduscopio · Secondary-school results

Explore comparative outcomes for Italian upper secondary schools. The latest published edition at the time of writing is 2025; this is not a ranking of primary schools.

IB World School Directory · Italy

Check whether an international school offers authorized IB programs for your child's age and educational stage.

Before signing a lease: verify your specific school's location, grade levels, language support, admissions availability, tuition where applicable, school-bus stops and realistic morning commute. Public-school enrollment and assignments may depend on residence and local rules. For older students, city-level results in Eduscopio can be informative, but do not substitute for an individual school visit or official admission confirmation.

Helpful answers before you move

Frequently asked questions about moving to Italy

Is groupage or a private container better for my move?

Door-to-door groupage is often economical for smaller shipments. A 20ft or 40ft private container provides dedicated space for larger household moves. We can recommend an option once we review your inventory and delivery address.

Do your Italy groupage rates include destination terminal charges?

Yes, our door-to-door Italy groupage rates include standard destination port fees and destination terminal handling charges (DTHC). Separate duties, taxes where applicable, inspections, storage and other services or exceptional costs may still apply, as shown in your quotation.

Can I bring my belongings to Italy without paying import duty or VAT?

Qualifying used personal goods may be eligible for customs duty and VAT exemption when you transfer your normal residence from outside the EU to Italy. Eligibility is not automatic and Italian customs authorities assess the documentation and conditions.

What paperwork is needed for duty- and VAT-relief clearance in Italy?

Italian customs may request your identification, a detailed household-goods inventory, proof of previous residence outside the EU and documentation showing your relocation to Italy. Our Italian destination office can review the requirements specific to your shipment before arrival.

How long does ocean shipping from the U.S. to Italy take?

Timing varies by origin, destination, shipping method, vessel schedules, port handling and customs processing. Groupage may require additional time for consolidation. Our team will discuss estimated timing when preparing your quote.

Can iLines arrange delivery to cities and towns throughout Italy?

We can coordinate relocation and delivery options through our destination office for many Italian locations, including major cities and surrounding regions, subject to service availability and access. Please share your full destination for an accurate quote.
